Shibari is an artistic style of rope bondage influenced by Japanese traditions. It's known for its striking patterns and for the intimate, often meditative connection between the person tying (the rigger) and the person being tied (often called the bottom or model).
What it means
The word shibari broadly means "to tie" in Japanese, and you'll also hear the term kinbaku. Outside Japan, "shibari" is often used for decorative and erotic rope work. For many people, the experience matters more than the finished look: the slow tying, the feeling of rope and the trust it builds.
Variations
- Floor work: ties done while the model sits or lies down.
- Decorative ties: body harnesses and patterns, often photographed.
- Partial suspension and suspension: advanced forms that lift some or all of the body. These carry significant risk and are learned through extensive in-person training.
- Self-tying: decorative ties on yourself, often used to practise patterns safely.
How it's understood
Shibari sits where kink, art and craft meet. Some people practise it with an erotic focus, others as performance or photography, and many as a calm, connecting ritual. It's commonly taught at rope classes and community meet-ups (munches can be a good place to find them).
Consent and communication
Agree the purpose of the session (artistic, sensual or kinky), where hands may go, what will be photographed, and how the model can stop at any time. Set safewords and non-verbal signals, and check in often while tying.
Safety and wellbeing
Rope can compress nerves and restrict circulation, and injuries can be lasting. We don't provide tying instructions here, because learning from experienced teachers in person is far safer. Key principles include keeping safety shears nearby, avoiding the neck, watching for tingling, numbness or colour changes, and never attempting suspension without proper training. Afterwards, aftercare helps the body and mind settle.
Common misconceptions
- "Shibari is always sexual." It can be, but often it's artistic or meditative.
- "It's just about pretty patterns." Safety and connection are central.
- "Suspension is the goal." Many experienced riggers never suspend at all.
